South San Francisco isn't a section of the city of San Francisco. It's a place all its own! When you drive past it on your way to or from the airport, stop there, take a break and look around. It will be fun!
Intro to "South City"
South San Francisco lies north of the airport and west of San Francisco Bay. Because of this, it has a slightly different climate than SF. The summers are drier, and it is shielded from much of the fog that covers SF in the summer months.
"South City" (as the locals call South San Francisco) is framed by hills and ridges. These afford beautiful views of valleys and mountains. The city is a great way to enjoy California without the hassle and traffic of large cities.
Recreation
South San Francisco is a great place to stay active. You'll find many green and well-groomed parks for you to play ball or simply go for a relaxing walk. There's a variety of activities, from swimming, taking the kids out for a day in the sun, or bringing your four-legged friend to the dog park.
Orange Memorial Park is the best recreation spot in South SF which is also pet-friendly. There are areas designated for smaller and larger dogs. The pens are huge so that pets have plenty of space to run around.
There are water fountains inside the pens and plenty of other dogs for your pet to be social with.
The park has an indoor pool, play structures for the kids, and picnic tables. As an added perk, the Taco Truck has delicious tacos to make an unforgettable afternoon picnic in South San Francisco.
Looking to go for a jog or a bike ride? There are places for that too in South San Francisco. The city has many well cared for trails with great views. The trails are less congested than in SF, and many of them provide great views of the airport. It's definitely cool to run by and see the airport operations staff readying the planes for takeoff!
Fine Dining
Looking to savor some tasty treats on your vacation? Lucky for you, South San Francisco has plenty of dining options for the discerning foodie.
Ristorante Buon Gusto is located at 224 Grand Ave. Look no further for the best Italian dining. Their minestrone soup is delicious! Also, be on the lookout for days where they offer the tortellini and pappardelle specials. With delicious food and friendly service, this place can't be beat.
For great Chinese food in South San Francisco, take a trip to Grand Palace Restaurant at 359 Grand Avenue. The portions are generous and the prices are very reasonable. And of course, the food is mouth-watering! This is a great place to go for dim sum and the suckling pig is tender and tasty. You definitely won't be disappointed.
Next time you hear "South San Francisco" don't think of it as a neighborhood of SF. It's a fun destination on its own, and deserves a visit!
